How to Track AI Citations: A Simple Manual Method

Nightcrop · October 31, 2026

To track AI citations, write 10 to 20 questions your customers ask, run them on a set schedule in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google, and record whether your site is linked in each answer. Then compare against analytics referrers and your server logs. A spreadsheet is enough to start, and it shows trends before you pay for a tool.

Why is tracking AI citations hard?

Classic rank tracking works because a results page is fairly stable: you are position 4 or you are not. AI answers are generated each time, so the same question can cite different sources on different days. Two consequences follow.

So tracking is a mix of three signals: what the answers say, who visits, and which bots fetch your pages.

Step 1: Build a question list

Write the questions a buyer or reader would type, not your brand name. Include:

Keep the list fixed so results stay comparable. Start with the pages you most want cited. If you are unsure which questions matter, see how to read search intent.

Step 2: Run the questions and log the result

Use one spreadsheet row per question per check, with these columns:

ColumnWhat to record
Date and platformChatGPT with search, Perplexity, Google AI Overview or AI Mode
QuestionThe exact wording you used
Cited?Yes or no: is a link to your domain shown
Mentioned?Yes or no: is your brand named without a link
Who was citedThe other domains in the answer

The last column is the useful one. The domains that keep appearing are your real competitors for that question, and their pages show what format the answer favors. Check weekly or every two weeks. Run each question in a fresh session, signed out where possible, so earlier chats do not shape the answer.

Step 3: Use Search Console for Google

Google states in its AI features documentation that sites appearing in AI Overviews and AI Mode are included in overall search traffic in Search Console, reported in the Performance report under the Web search type. That means you cannot isolate AI clicks as a separate line. You can still watch impressions and clicks for the pages and queries you care about, and see whether they move after you change a page.

Step 4: Check referrers in analytics

When someone clicks a link in an AI answer, the visit may arrive with a referrer such as chatgpt.com or perplexity.ai, depending on the product and the browser. In your analytics tool, open the traffic sources report and look for those names. We could not open an official statement from either company on exactly how referrals are labeled, so treat the numbers as a floor. Some visits will land as direct traffic.

Also expect the counts to be small. Seeing three visits a month from an AI product is normal for a young site and still worth noting, because it shows which pages get picked.

Step 5: Read your server logs

Logs show bot fetches that analytics never see, such as OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot. A fetch is not a citation, but a page that bots never request is unlikely to be cited. Perplexity's bot documentation says PerplexityBot is designed to surface and link websites in Perplexity search results, and that Perplexity-User may visit a page and link to it when a user asks a question. Our guide to AI crawler monitoring walks through the log checks.

What do you do with the results?

  1. Not cited, and bots are blocked. Fix access first. See robots.txt for ChatGPT and Perplexity.
  2. Not cited, bots can read the page. Compare your page to the cited ones. Is the direct answer in the first paragraph? Is it more specific? Our guides on ChatGPT citations and Perplexity citations cover what you control.
  3. Mentioned but not linked. The model knows you but did not fetch the page. Make the page easier to retrieve for that question.
  4. Cited. Leave it alone and keep it accurate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I track AI citations for free?

Yes. A spreadsheet, a fixed question list and a few minutes a week works. Paid tools mainly automate the repeated checking.

How often should I check?

Weekly or every two weeks is enough. Daily checks mostly record noise, since answers change between runs.

Why does my brand appear in one run and not the next?

AI answers are generated fresh each time, so sources can vary. That is why you track the share of runs that cite you rather than a single result.

Does being cited mean I get traffic?

Not always. Some users read the answer and never click. Track both citations and visits, and judge the page by the questions it answers.

Is a citation the same as a mention?

No. A citation links to your page. A mention names your brand with or without a link. Record them separately because they point to different fixes.
