How to Get Cited by ChatGPT: What You Can Control

Nightcrop · October 26, 2026

To be cited by ChatGPT, let OpenAI's search crawler, OAI-SearchBot, read your site, then publish pages that answer a specific question clearly and are easy to quote. No setting or markup guarantees a citation. You control access and page quality, and the rest is up to the system.

Which OpenAI crawlers matter?

OpenAI documents three user agents on its bots page, and they do different jobs.

User agentWhat it doesRelevance to citations
OAI-SearchBotSurfaces sites in ChatGPT's search featuresAllow it to be eligible for search answers
GPTBotCollects content that may be used to train OpenAI's modelsControls training use, separate from search
ChatGPT-UserVisits a page when a user asks ChatGPT to, such as in a questionUser-initiated, so robots.txt rules may not apply

According to OpenAI, sites that opt out of OAI-SearchBot will not appear in ChatGPT search answers, though they may still show up as navigational links. OpenAI also says a robots.txt change can take around 24 hours to take effect. The step by step version is in our guide to allowing ChatGPT and Perplexity in robots.txt.

What is the first thing to check?

Open your robots.txt and look for rules that disallow OAI-SearchBot, or a blanket rule that blocks all bots. Many sites block GPTBot to keep content out of training, which is a separate choice. Blocking GPTBot does not by itself block OAI-SearchBot, so you can decline training use and still be eligible for search answers. Check each user agent on its own line.

Do you need special markup or an llms.txt file?

For Google's AI features, no. Google says a page "must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet" to appear as a supporting link, and that you do not need new machine readable files, AI text files or markup. That is Google's statement about Google. Its AI features page says nothing on how ChatGPT chooses sources, and I found no OpenAI document that promises a ranking boost for any file or schema. We cover the file question in do you need an llms.txt file.

What kind of page gets quoted?

OpenAI does not publish a citation formula, so this section is practical advice, not a documented rule. Pages that are easy to lift an answer from tend to share these traits:

These are the same habits behind answer engine optimization, and they help ordinary search too.

How can you tell whether you are being cited?

Do it by hand first. Ask ChatGPT the questions your pages answer, with search turned on, and read the sources it lists. Record the date, the exact question and whether your domain appears. Answers vary from one run to the next, so repeat the check over several days and treat one result as a sample, not a verdict. Also look at your server logs for OAI-SearchBot requests, which at least confirm the crawler can reach you.

If you want that tracked over time, Nightcrop checks whether AI answer engines cite your domain alongside your organic rankings.

Why might you be crawled but not cited?

Being crawled is only the entry requirement. The page still has to be the better source for that question.

A simple plan

  1. Allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt and decide on GPTBot separately.
  2. Pick five questions your customers ask.
  3. Give each its own page with the answer in the first paragraph.
  4. Link to primary sources for every fact.
  5. Test the questions in ChatGPT weekly and log what you see.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I pay to be cited by ChatGPT?

OpenAI's bots page describes no paid route for citations. Eligibility comes from letting the search crawler read your site.

Does blocking GPTBot stop ChatGPT citations?

Not by itself. GPTBot relates to training, while OAI-SearchBot relates to search features.

How long until a change shows up?

OpenAI says robots.txt updates can take about 24 hours to be picked up. Appearing in answers can take longer and is not guaranteed.

Do I need structured data to be cited?

No source I opened says it is required. Clear, indexable pages with direct answers are the safer investment.

Is being cited the same as ranking in Google?

No. They are separate systems with separate crawlers, though pages that answer questions well tend to do well in both.
