What Is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)? A Plain Guide

Nightcrop · October 25, 2026

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the work of making your pages easy for AI assistants and search features to pick as the source of an answer. It builds on ordinary SEO: be crawlable, be indexed, answer the question near the top, and be clear about who wrote it and what it covers.

What does "answer engine" mean?

An answer engine is any system that responds to a question with a written answer instead of a list of links. ChatGPT search, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews all do this. They read pages, write a response, and usually show a few links as sources. AEO is about being one of those links.

How is AEO different from SEO?

The goals differ slightly. SEO aims for a ranking position and a click. AEO aims for a citation or mention inside a generated answer. The inputs overlap far more than the sales pitches suggest.

That "starts with" row is the point. If a crawler cannot fetch your page, nothing else on this list matters.

What do the platforms actually say?

Read the primary sources before buying any advice, because much of what circulates about AEO is guesswork.

So the documented checklist is short: allow the crawlers, keep the page indexable, and write something worth quoting.

A practical AEO checklist

  1. Let the crawlers in. Check robots.txt for rules that block search crawlers. See how to allow ChatGPT and Perplexity.
  2. Make sure the page is indexed. Google says indexing and snippet eligibility come first. Use this guide to check.
  3. Answer first. Put a direct answer of about 40 to 60 words in the opening paragraph, then explain.
  4. Use question headings. When a heading is the question people ask, the paragraph under it is easy to lift as an answer.
  5. Be specific and sourced. Name the thing, give the number, link the primary source. Vague pages give a model nothing to quote.
  6. Skip the magic files. Google says none are needed. For the one most often pitched, read whether you need an llms.txt file.

What AEO cannot promise

No one can guarantee a citation. Neither Google nor OpenAI documents a ranking formula for generated answers, and the answers change from one query to the next. Treat any vendor that promises a guaranteed spot in ChatGPT with suspicion. What you can control is access, indexing and the quality of the page.

Where to start this week

Pick your five most important pages. For each, confirm it is indexed, confirm no crawler is blocked, and rewrite the first paragraph so it answers the page's main question outright. That takes an afternoon and covers most of what the platforms document.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is AEO the same as GEO?

The terms overlap. Both describe getting content used in AI-generated answers. AEO is the more common label for answer-style results, and there is no standard that separates them.

Does AEO replace SEO?

No. The page still has to be crawled and indexed first, which is SEO. AEO adds the habit of writing pages that are easy to quote.

Do I need schema markup for AI Overviews?

Not according to Google, which says there is no special structured data required to appear in AI Overviews.

How do I know if an AI assistant cites my site?

Ask the assistants your target questions and read the sources they list. Repeat monthly and note changes, since answers vary.

Can I block AI crawlers and still do AEO?

OpenAI says sites that opt out of its search crawler are left out of ChatGPT search answers. Check each vendor's documentation for which crawler does what before editing robots.txt.
